Craps Records: The Longest Rolls Ever Documented

May 23, 1989. Golden Nugget Las Vegas. A woman named Phyllis Jay held the dice for 4 hours and 18 minutes. She threw 154 rolls without crapping out. Her odds of accomplishing this were approximately 1 in 5.6 billion.

I mention this because every craps player has heard about it. Most players overestimate how rare it actually is. It's rare. But not cosmically so. The math is worth understanding.

Craps out means rolling a 2, 3, or 12. The odds of crapping out on any single roll are 4 in 36, or 11.1 percent. The odds of not crapping out on a single roll are 32 in 36, or 88.9 percent. Over 154 rolls, the probability of never rolling a 2, 3, or 12 is approximately 0.000000018 percent. This is the "1 in 5.6 billion" figure.

But this calculation assumes that each roll is independent (which it is) and that the probabilities are exact (which they approximately are). In practice, Phyllis Jay's roll involved variance. The point was established early. She continued rolling without hitting the craps numbers. Probability worked in her favor. A lot.

The Records

The longest documented craps roll is indeed Phyllis Jay's 4 hours and 18 minutes. This is widely accepted in craps circles. The second-longest is attributed to Stanley Fujitake, also at the Golden Nugget, in 1989 (the same year as Jay's record). His roll lasted 3 hours and 6 minutes with 118 consecutive rolls without crapping out.

Wait. Let me correct that. Fujitake's roll was in 1989. More recently, claims have emerged about longer rolls at other casinos, but these are either undocumented or documented only by anecdotal casino employees. The official records, as maintained by the Golden Nugget and cross-referenced with gaming publications, credit Jay and Fujitake.

There are also longer rolls that occurred before records were systematically kept. The 1970s saw several claims of rolls exceeding 5 hours. None of these are verified by independent observation or casino documentation. The verifiable record is Jay.

The Mechanics

A long craps roll requires two things: sustained luck and sustained focus. The shooter must not craps out (roll 2, 3, or 12). They must also either make the point repeatedly or keep rolling numbers that extend the shootout without resolving it.

Phyllis Jay's 154 rolls likely included numerous point hits, seven-outs on new points, and extended chains where the point was established and made multiple times before finally crapping out. The mathematics of 154 non-craps rolls happening in sequence is extreme. The mechanics of it (point hits, point misses that don't result in craps) are within normal variance.

What separates Jay's roll from the thousands of daily craps rolls at casinos is pure probability compounding. She did not roll any different than anyone else. She simply got lucky in a very specific way (not rolling craps) for an extended period.

The Practical Significance

Long craps rolls are exciting because they generate massive amounts of betting action. A shooter on a 4-hour roll might generate $500,000 in total wagering across the table. The house takes its percentage of every bet. The pass line bettors get to ride a hot roll. The don't pass bettors take repeated losses.

From a probability standpoint, a long roll tells us something about variance and the nature of gambling. Casinos expect variance. They build their financial models to accommodate it. A 4-hour craps roll is variance expressing itself dramatically. It is not impossible. It is just rare.

Some players treat long rolls as evidence of skill. The reality: luck. Phyllis Jay was not a better dice thrower than anyone else. She was luckier. The randomness of the dice favored her in an extreme way.

The Record Will Fall

Eventually, someone will roll longer than Phyllis Jay. The probability of a 5-hour roll is lower than 1 in 5.6 billion. But given enough casinos, enough craps tables, enough shooters, the event becomes inevitable over long enough timescales. It hasn't happened yet (or hasn't been documented). It will.

When it does, the casino will make money off it. The shooters will have fun. The don't pass bettors will suffer. And the record will sit in casino lore until the next improbable streak occurs.
