Future of Polygon Crypto: Roadmap, POL Supply and Agglayer

Polygon's shipped Rio upgrade, its 100k TPS gigagas target, POL's capped emission and Agglayer's loss limits, read from Polygon Labs' own documents.

Rows of hexagonal tokens stacked like bars, green and black ones built and capped by a steel straightedge, with only outlines marking the stacks still planned.

The future of Polygon crypto, read from Polygon Labs' own documents rather than price charts, comes down to three things: a payments upgrade already live on mainnet, a roadmap toward 100k TPS that is still a plan, and a POL token whose issuance is capped in code. The shipped parts and the planned parts sit in different documents, and this note keeps them apart.

What Polygon has already shipped

Two changes are done and documented: the MATIC to POL migration and the Rio upgrade on the PoS chain. Everything else in the roadmap is a target.

The POL token docs state that POL's initial supply was 10 billion, matching MATIC on a 1:1 basis at migration. One detail most coverage skips: migrated MATIC sits in the migration contract and is not burned, and governance controls an unmigration feature (as of October 2026).

Rio went live on mainnet in October 2025. Polygon Labs says throughput rose over 3x to about 5k TPS under the new block production model, VEBloP. That figure is Polygon's own claim, not an independent benchmark. Rio also introduced witness-based stateless block validation under PIP-72, and it changed who gets paid: fees, MEV included, are now shared between the block proposer and the wider validator set.

What the roadmap only plans

The Gigagas roadmap, published in June 2025, lists targets, not delivered features. Polygon Labs adds that it may alter or update the post at its sole discretion, so every line below is a stated intention.

Roadmap itemStated targetStatus in the documents
Throughput, end of 20255000+ TPS by OctoberRio reports about 5k TPS (Polygon's claim)
Finality (Bhilai)From 60-90 seconds to about fiveTarget in the roadmap post
Agglayer integrationCross-chain liquidity for PoSTarget in the roadmap post
2026 and beyondGigagas upgrade for 100k TPSTarget, no shipped release cited

The end-2025 line called for 5000+ TPS, Agglayer integration and one-second blocktimes with no re-orgs. The finality goal was to cut finality from 60-90 seconds to roughly five. The long-range item is a gigagas upgrade for 100k TPS alongside institutional integrations. Against that list, only the throughput line has a matching shipped release in the source set.

POL token design: supply and emission

POL's issuance has a ceiling written into the contract, while the rate under that ceiling is a governance decision.

The original POL emission proposal set 2% a year, split as 1% to the community treasury and 1% to validator rewards. The rate can change through governance by upgrading the EmissionManager contract, but it cannot exceed the mintPerSecondCap in the primary POL contract (as of October 2026). That cap is the hard limit on dilution; any future vote works inside it.

Validator pay follows PIP-26. It kept rewards on the original MATIC schedule until June 2025, then started 1% annual POL emission for validators in July 2025. The PIP-26 table puts the sixth-year validator reward pool (June 2025 to June 2026) at 103,530,000 POL, against 102,100,000 on the old schedule.

Agglayer: what the documentation commits to

Agglayer is the cross-chain layer the roadmap ties Polygon's scaling to, and its docs describe security rules that are already defined rather than promised.

The central mechanism is the pessimistic proof: a compromised chain cannot drain more than its own deposits. That bounds the damage one bad chain can do to the shared pool. The docs also note that Agglayer is no longer EVM-only, since Miden joined as a non-EVM connected chain, and that every CDK chain ships with Agglayer connectivity by default (as of October 2026).

Future of Polygon crypto prediction: what the documents support

A prediction grounded in Polygon's own papers can cover throughput, finality and supply, but not price. None of the five sources here states a price target.

What can be projected from the documents:

  • Issuance: validator emission runs at 1% a year under PIP-26, with any change bounded by mintPerSecondCap.
  • Throughput: Polygon reports about 5k TPS after Rio; 100k TPS is a gigagas target with no shipped release in this source set.
  • Finality: the about-five-seconds goal is stated, not reported as delivered here.
  • Interoperability: Agglayer's loss limit per chain and its non-EVM support are documented as current.

What cannot be projected: market price, adoption figures and any date for the 100k TPS upgrade. Price forecasts and buying guides are left to later reads in this cluster.

Sector questions

What will Polygon be worth in five years?

None of Polygon's primary documents sets a price, so no figure here comes from them. What they do fix is the supply side: POL started at 10 billion tokens, emission sits at 1% a year for validators under the current schedule, and any governance change to issuance stays below the mintPerSecondCap in the POL contract (as of October 2026).

Is Polygon a good crypto investment?

That is a judgment the sources do not make and this sheet does not either. The measurable inputs are the shipped Rio upgrade, a roadmap that Polygon Labs reserves the right to change, and a validator reward pool of 103,530,000 POL for the June 2025 to June 2026 year under PIP-26.

Will Polygon reach a dollar?

Polygon's roadmap, token docs and Agglayer docs contain no price targets, so they cannot answer this. They describe throughput goals, finality goals and token issuance rules, which are the parts of the network's future that can be checked against a dated document.
